Updated: Sep 6, 2020

If you are a busy bee like us, chances are you are constantly looking for a delicious easy recipe for dinner. Most days we only have enough time to cook something quick and easy but we also don't want to compromise the taste and flavors. We are big fans of flavorful spicy food so we came up with this Asian Meatballs in Chili Sauce dish.

This dish goes really well with a side of white/brown rice. This is a great dish for parties as well. You can make this in a larger batch and use it to meal prep. It's not overly spicy and is packed with amazing flavors. This is a super versatile recipe and you can definitely substitute the pork meatballs with any meatballs of your choice; though we do prefer the pork meatballs shown in the ingredients below since the flavor of the meatballs goes perfectly with it. These meatballs are usually available at any asian grocery stores.

We love this recipe and hopefully you enjoy it too!

Tip: The cooking process goes by really fast as we start adding the ingredients so make sure to have all your ingredients prepped, ready and near you before you start cooking.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack or 11oz of Cooked Pork Meatballs

  • 4-6 Cloves of Garlic (1 ½ tbsp of Minced Garlic)

  • 2-3 stalks of Green Onion

  • 1 medium Onion (or 1 cup of Onion Petals)

  • 1 medium Green Bell Pepper (or 1 cup of about 1 inch square)

  • Chili Sauce Mix

  • 2 Dry Red Chilis

  • 1 tsp of Sesame Oil

  • 2 tbsp of Vegetables Oil

  • 1 tsp of Ginger Garlic Paste

Ingredients for the Chili Sauce Mix:

  • 2 tbsp of Ground Fresh Chili Paste

  • ½ tsp of Ground Black Pepper

  • 1 tbsp of White Vinegar

  • 1 tsp of Water

  • 1/4 tsp of Himalayan Pink Salt

  • 1/2 tbsp of Dark Soy Sauce

Preparation of Ingredients:

1. Start by boiling the pork meatballs on medium heat for about 7-10 min. Below is the pork meatballs that goes really well with this recipe. Even though the meatballs are cooked, we like to boil the meatballs before cooking. Boiling the meatballs make them expand and become larger. It also gives them a more even and rounder shape.

2. While the meatballs are boiling get started on preparing the other ingredients.

3. Mince the garlic and set aside. We recommend you mince/finely chop fresh garlic at home for better flavor but you can also use store bought minced garlic for your convenience.

4. Finely slice the green onions. Make sure to separate the green and the white parts of the green onions as we are going to use them separately during the cooking process.

5. Cut the onion into petals. Watch our youtube video linked below for visual instructions on how to cut onion petals. Make sure the onion petals are separated before you start cooking. This makes the onion cook more evenly and also makes your dish look prettier.

6. Cut the green bell pepper into 1 inch squares. We are not going to use the center/seeds of the bell pepper in this dish so make sure to take them out.

7. Now prepare the Chili Sauce Mix by mixing the ground fresh chili paste, dark soy sauce, white vinegar, water, ground black pepper, and Himalayan pink salt together. Give it a good stir to thoroughly mix it and set it aside.

8. For the Ginger Garlic paste you can either make it at home by taking equal parts of ginger and garlic and crushing them into a paste using a mortar and pestle or you can just use the store bought ones. I prefer using the store bought ones. It cuts down the preparation time and does not compromise the taste. Convenience is the key!

9. Once the meatballs are done boiling, let them cool and cut the meatballs in quarters. if you are in rush you can just hold the meatballs with a fork and cut them. Always be safe and don't burn yourself. Cutting the meatballs make the flavors get in the meatballs much better and the bite size pieces makes it easier to serve and eat.

Cooking Instructions:

Now we are ready to start the cooking process. It is going to be a fast process! We will be cooking on Medium to High heat the entire time.

1. In a pan, add the oil.

2. Once the oil is hot, add in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.

3. Add the green onion whites and cook for another 15 seconds.

4. Add the dry red chilis and cook for another 30 seconds.

5. Add the ginger garlic paste. Cook until the garlic and ginger garlic paste become golden brown. It should only take about 30-60 seconds.

6. Add the bell pepper and onion petals and cook for 1-2 min. Don't over cook the bell pepper and onion petals, we want them to be nice and crunchy.

7. Add the meatballs and cook for about 1-2 min or until they are lightly golden brown on the edges.

8. Add the chili sauce mixture and give it a good mix to make sure the meatballs and vegetables are evenly coated with the chili sauce mix. Cook for about 2-4 minutes or until the sauce thickens.

9. Add the sesame oil and cook for another 30 seconds to give it a nice aromatic flavor. Although this step is optional, we highly recommend you don't skip this step.

10. Sprinkle on the green onion greens and your Asian Pork Meatballs in Chili Sauce dish is ready to eat. Serve and enjoy!
